Above is my classroom floor plan. There are 5 table groups and one carpet group. The students will rotate and work at their designated location depending on which stage they are at in the writing process. For those students that are doing extremely well or for those who may work better alone, I will encourage them to write in various places around the room. They can work at the writing center, at the computers, or in the classroom library. When it comes to sharing their work, students can do so at their table groups or at the sharing/conversation carpet.
Before the students are given independent time to write, I will do a Mini- Lesson in front of the entire class to go over any material that the students may need help in to improve their overall writing. When this is done, students will be dismissed to the Writer's Workshop table to give me information about their individual writing progress. Students will take their die-cut pencil with their name on it and place it in the pencil holder that shows me where they are in the writing process. This will allow me to quickly check the status of the class every single day.
Students will then be given the time to work on their writing. During this time, I will also hold my one on one writing conferences at the directed group work/conferencing table. The students will know who I am conferencing with each day because their names will be displayed on the overhead during writing time.
In the Writing center, students have access to all of the writing materials they would need. This is also where students can find examples of various types and styles of writing.
